Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Scotland County public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Unauthorized use of county property
People have been hosting events — sometimes with alcohol — on county property without permission. The new Buildings and Grounds policy lets the county rent the I.E. Johnson field like a park and require security for alcohol events.
Youth Drowning Prevention and Swim Education
Following the drowning of a nine-year-old boy, the board asked the HHS Advisory Council to research swim-lesson programming and partnerships with nonprofits and parks and recreation.
Youth baseball delays in Parks and Recreation
A volunteer coach said baseball fields are unsafe — mounds crumbling, gravel infields — and a baseball mom and coaches pushed for field upgrades. The board directed converting one Morgan Complex field to baseball and refurbishing the softball fields.
High School Tennis Court Resurfacing
A resident asked that soccer goals be added when the county spends about $100,000 fixing the tennis courts, so youth and young adults can play small-sided soccer there.
John Blue House completion
The contractor got an August 7 deadline to finish the punch list or face contract penalties; the historic board hopes to open the building by late August.
I.E. Johnson inclusive playground
A $190,000 handicap-inclusive playground, 100% funded by a Trillium grant, is complete with a ribbon cutting set for February 12 — the only fully inclusive playground in the county.
